The Fullbright Foreign Student Program is an international scholarship program open to students in different international countries. You are to apply online and await your application status within a few periods of time. The program provides grants to selected applicants. Fullbright Foreign Student Program

This program enables graduate students, young professionals, and artists, from abroad to study and conduct research in the US. Fullbright Foreign Student Program operates in over 160 countries worldwide, and approximately 4,000 foreign students receive the Fullbright scholarships yearly. This program is administered by the binational Fullbright Commissions/Foundations or the United States Embassies. Desired applicants are to be processed by the offices as mention.

Scholarship Grants – Fullbright Foreign Student Program

There is a grant for the selected applicants in this program. The grants cover the applicant’s round-trip airfare to the United States. It also offers the applicants a setting-in allowance and computer allowance. The grant also covers the basic university health insurance as primary insurance coverage and health benefit as secondary coverage.

The program is extremely competitive, particularly in the fields o journalism, communication, and business administration, sciences which include chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering-related courses.


The Fullbright Foreign Student Program eligibility and selection procedure varies widely by the applicant’s country. You can get to search for your country’s eligibility via a list that I will be providing a link to. If your country is not listed, then you are not eligible to apply for the Fullbright Foreign Student Program.

How to check your eligibility

Follow the below procedure to get your eligibility status:

  • Get your PC or mobile phone connected to the internet or working Wi-Fi.
  • Launch a web browser.
  • Enter into the URL https://foreign.fullbrightonline.org/applicants.
  • Scroll below to the country section.
  • Select the drop-down arrow from the country bar.

Here you will be given the list of the country’s applicants can apply from for the Fullbright Foreign Student Program.

Eligibility Requirements

To be seen eligible for the program, here are the requirements:

  • Applicants must be a citizen or national of the country he/she is applying from, or a permanent resident holding a valid passport issued by the country’s government.
  • He/she must be a DOCTORAL or Ph.D. student who has completed a significant amount of their doctoral program in a university from the country he/she is from and have the endorsement of their home institution.
  • Applicants must have outstanding academic recent results and record, and a high level for this program.
  • Candidates must take their first TOEFL exam recently.
  • They must meet a minimum score on required standardized tests (TOEFL: a score of 90).
  • Applicants must have high motivation and commitment to completing the program as scheduled and to returning home.
  • For only applicants with strong proposals, outlining their research objectives, methodology, time frame, and justification for conduction research in the United States.
  • Students who have not yet studied in the US will be given preference.

NOTE: Masters and First Degree applicants are not qualified to apply for the program.

How to apply for the program

After you have checked on your eligibility country, you can then get to apply based on your country application process. Follow the below steps to apply for the scholarship (I will be using the country Nigeria* as this article application process):

  • Get your PC or mobile phone connected to the internet or working Wi-Fi.
  • Launch a web browser.
  • Enter into the URL https://foreign.fullbrightonline.org/applicants.
  • Scroll below to the country section.
  • Select the drop-down arrow from the country bar.
  • Click on your country if it is on the list.
  • You will be shown your country regional office and the FLTA Information.
  • So, you can either visit or mail the regional sub-office or click on the FLTA Information website link.
  • Check through the requirements and other details on the scholarship.
  • Click on the Apply link and you will be redirected to the application section.
  • Create an account by providing your Email Address, First and Last Name, and Birthdate.
  • Verify your account via the link sent to your mail.
  • Search for the Fullbright Foreign Student Program.
  • Click on Apply.
  • Provide the basic requirement and submit your application.

Complete Application

A complete application for the program includes:

  • Outline application which includes a clearly written research objective, and a professional resume.
  • TOEFL score report.
  • A student copy of the academic transcript from each institution attended should be scanned and attached to the application.
  • Three reference letters specifying the personal, academic, and professional competence of the applicant. This is to be submitted electronically and attached also to the online application.
