The Bournemouth University New Media Writing Prize 2020 for Students and Professionals showcases exciting and inventive stories that bring us a variety of formats, platforms, and digital media. For the past six years, the NMWP has attracted applicants who intend to be the very best and most innovative writers in the field. The prize awarded encourages and promotes the best in new media writers and it is leading toward the future of written word and storytelling. This 2020 competition will include four prizes: The Ifbook UK New Media Writing Award, the Unicorn Student Award, the Dot Award, and the Digital Journalism Award.

The essence of new-media writing is great storytelling which uses anything that can be offered by the digital media, along with user/audience interactivity. It’s got to be something that has never been used in ‘old’ media.

  • The Dot Award.
  • The Gorkana Journalism Award.

Eligibility

  • Anyone can apply. The competition is open to students, a professional, an artist, a writer, a developer, a designer,or an enthusiast.
  • It is an international competition which is also open to all outside the UK.
  • Entries do need to be in English.

The Dot Award: The prize will be awarded to applicants who can project an idea which shows promise and practicability in the judges’ opinion. It is aimed at projects which aren’t necessarily technically complex but create an original and exciting literary work inspired by the affordances of the web, blogs, apps, social media etc. Chris Meade and Ifbook UK will liaise with the winner to support the project, which will be showcased at the 2020 New Media Writing Prize award ceremony.

The Future Journalism Award: This Journalism Award honours innovative stories which is based on factual material and also featuring digital media. There is also consideration of interactive documentaries, multimedia features and gamified journalism. Entries are required to incorporate new media technologies and platforms.

Criteria for the Future Journalism Award

  • Applicants innovative use of new media to create an engaging, satisfying fact-based narrative.
  • He/she does not need to be topical, but must be socially relevant.
  • Applicants must adhere to journalistic standards of accuracy and fairness.
  • Ease of accessibility for the reader/viewer.
  • Effective use of interactive elements.
  • Includes an example of how new media can do things that traditional media cannot do.
  • Brings a potential to reach out to a wide audience, i.e. not just specialist interest groups​

The Skylab Innovation Award: This is a special award established to celebrate 10 years of collaboration between Bournemouth University and Skylab. Applicants are to submit their entries to this category and it must be built and published in Genarrator. It is free to create an account. All design, editing, and publishing are been operate on by the applicants online via Genarrator’s unique and very easy-to-use interface. Meaning the competition is held online.

Criteria for the Skylab Innovation Award

  • Applicants innovative use of the Generator platform to create an engaging, satisfying fiction or non-narrative online.
  • Effective use of interactive elements.
  • An example of how Generator can do things that traditional media cannot do.
  • The applicant’s potential to reach out to a wide audience, which is not just specialist interest groups​.

Selection Criteria

There are criteria through which applicants are to be selected after the competition entries. The selection criteria include:

  • The candidates use of new (digital) media/transmedia to create an engaging, satisfying narrative, or poem, or as-yet-unspecified form. Fiction or non-fiction.
  • Ease of accessibility for the reader/viewer.
  • Effective use of interactive elements.
  • Applicants provision of a great example of how new media can do things traditional media can’t.
  • His/her potential to reach out to a wide range of audience (i.e. not just specialist interest groups).

Value of Award

Here are the value/grants awarded to the winner of each of the competition:

  • Unicorn Training Student Award: Grants a sum of about £750 donated by Unicorn Training.
  • Ifbook UK New Media Writing Prize: Grants a sum of about £1000 which is donated by Ifbook UK, where the winner may also be a student.
  • The Journalism Award: Grants a sum of about £tbc for the winner, where the winner may also be a student.
  • The Dot Award grants a cost of about £500 and development support, offered by Ifbook UK, where the winner may also be a student.
  • The Skylab Innovation: Grants an award of about £500, where the winner may also be a student.

How to Apply: To submit his/her entry, each entrant must do the following by the set deadlines (Late entries will not be considered):

  • Go to the NMWP website.
  • From the subheader sections, click on “Enter the Competition”.
  • Provide your mane, email, address, telephone number, postal address, the of the work, details about your entry and how they can access it, a short autobiography, and confirm if you are a student.
  • Click on “Submit this information”.

Follow the next guidelines to successfully create an application for this competition. After which you are to wait for the selection committee of the competition to pick their judged winners after the application.
